President’s Day is the one day of the year where we honor past presidents like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln who utilized their intelligence and moral discipline to build this country from a scrappy British colony into a preeminent world power. Which makes me wonder if they were alive today, what would they think of the country that they fought so hard to guide and protect?

My first thought was that our founding fathers would be embarrassed and disgusted that celebrity sex tapes, stints in rehab, and prison sentences occupy the national spotlight, but then I realized that it’s easy to blame the moral degradation of our society on the theatrical stunts of a few tabloid starlets.

When the real truth is that our nation is only as good as our leaders. And in the last sixteen years we’ve had one adulterous president who utilized the oval office like it was a Malaysian sex den and another president whose blind ambition sought to unravel the very laws set forth in our Constitution.

It just might be that they wouldn’t be ashamed of what our country has become but that they were even presidents to begin with.
